How the team picker works: The fairest way to pick teams
Captains picking players is a playground tradition nobody enjoys except the captains. Using a team picker wheel or random team picker replaces social awkwardness with an impartial, transparent process. Paste your group roster, spin, and deal the results into balanced squads. Everyone sees the wheel turn in real-time, making the outcome impossible to argue with.
Two proven methods for fair team drafting
Method 1: The snake draft (best for 2 teams)
-
Paste the roster and enable Remove winner
Each spin removes the picked player, producing an unbiased sequence of names.
-
Spin and alternate
First pick goes to Team A, second to Team B — or snake it (A, B, B, A) for tighter skill balance.
-
Read from the Results list
Prefer to spin quickly? Run through everyone, then split the final Results order down the middle.
Method 2: The dealing method (best for 3+ groups)
Spin once through the entire roster with Remove winner enabled. Then deal the Results list like playing cards: position 1 → Group 1, position 2 → Group 2, position 3 → Group 3, and so on. Every team ends up within one member of the same size, built from a single verifiable random draw.
Where people use this random team picker
- PE and sports practice: generate scrimmage teams in front of the whole squad.
- Classroom project groups: pair it with our random student picker for lessons and presentations.
- Game nights and trivia: instant party squads with zero politics or bias.
- Workshops and offsites: break department silos with visibly randomized breakout tables.

Cryptographic team selection
swheel uses the browser’s native W3C Web Cryptography API to seed each spin. Unlike simple pseudo-random seeds, each rotation angle and deceleration curve produces cryptographically uniform entropy. No names or participant rosters are ever sent to a remote server.
Team generator FAQ
How do I split names into teams with this wheel?
Turn on Remove winner, then spin and assign each picked name alternately to Team A and Team B. The Results list shows the full random order, which you can split anywhere.
Can I generate more than two teams?
Yes — spin the full elimination order once, then deal the Results list into however many groups you need (positions 1, 4, 7… become Team 1, and so on). Balanced and argument-proof.
Is the team order truly random?
Yes. Each spin uses browser-native cryptographic randomness via window.crypto.getRandomValues, so the resulting order is a genuine random permutation of your roster.
Can I make captains or seed strong players?
You can handle seeding manually: remove captains from the list first, then spin the remaining roster into teams around them.
